It\u2019s that time of the year again, especially for those of us in the tropics and subtropics.<\/p>\n

Living a dozen stone throws from where baby sea sea turtles are now emerging from nests under the sand on Florida\u2019s east coast, we\u2019re glued to the television for updates about Hurricane \u201cIsaias.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many folks are wondering about that name, so some clarification is in order…<\/p>\n

El nombre is Spanish for the major Hebrew Prophet, Yeshayahu…Isaiah. It means \u201cG_d is Salvation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hebrew endings \u201c-ah,\u201d \u201c-el,\u201d and \u201c-yahu\u201d are somewhat interchangeable. The ending “-ah” may be changed to “-as” in Latin-based languages. Ergo, Isaias equals Isaiah, and so forth.<\/p>\n

Since so many people have such Hebrew names (Jews and non-Jews alike), the following links should be interesting. Benjamin Netanyahu could thus also be Benjamin (Benyamin \u2014there\u2019s no letter \u201cJ\u201d in Hebrew) Netaniel…. Nathaniel (\u201cGiven of G_d\u201d).<\/p>\n

May this unleashed force of nature, Hurricane Yeshayahu\/Isaiah\/Isaias, spare us all from harm and honor its namesake\u2019s mercy and gentle caring.<\/p>\n
