Herb Keinon and Khaled Abu Toameh reported in the October 21, 2018 Jerusalem Post on King Abdullah II of Jordan\u2019s decision to downgrade its peace treaty with Israel.<\/p>\n

More specifically, this decision involves Jordan wanting to\u2026\u201copt out of annexes from its 1994 peace treaty with Israel that leased two border areas that historically were difficult to delineate\u2026the king’s decision followed a request from government activists not to renew the agreement and to revoke Israeli ownership from Jordanian land.\u201d Israel had been using the areas for agricultural purposes. The report further explained that\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cAbdullah is in a vice. While he needs the peace treaty with Israel for the security of his regime, he has domestic Islamic elements to deal with and at times placate. He is also dealing with Syrian crisis, which has not only inundated his country with refugees,\u00a0but also put Iran perilously close. The language Abdullah used in announcing the move–Jordanian land, Jordanian interests–is a bone thrown to the Islamists.\u201d<\/p>\n

In reality, I doubt that Islamists care much about the \u201cJordanian\u201d aspect to this issue.<\/p>\n

What Islamists do <\/em>care about is the land being in the hands of folks from their perceived Dar al-Harb <\/em>(realm of war)–not Dar ul-Islam<\/em>\u2026especially those of the Arabs\u2019 despised kilab yahud <\/em>ilk—<\/em>“Jew dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

All of this brought back memories, still lingering issues, and often deliberate misinformation dished out about the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and its origins.<\/p>\n

Dr. Aaron Klieman’s book, Foundations of British Policy In The Arab World: The Cairo Conference of 1921 <\/em>(Johns Hopkins Press, 1970), should be “must reading” for those who truly want to make sense out of the conflict between Arab and Jew in the Middle East. It’s one of those references that other reasonably objective scholars used to cite in their own works. Nowadays, however, with much of this field having been hijacked by a blatantly anti-American and anti-Israel fraternity (think MESA, in particular), things have changed drastically.<\/p>\n

The chief tenured prof who taught this subject at Ohio State, for instance, in the \u201870s and \u201880s managed to teach an entire graduate course (I know…I was there) on the Palestine Mandate period after World War I without ever bothering to mention either Klieman’s book or the facts which you’ll read below. That was almost four decades ago, and woe unto thee if you dared bring such things up. Again…I know,\u00a0all too well. \u00a0Things have gotten even worse today. And such (often deliberate) omissions were\/are no accident. The mainstream media folks and others have also joined academia in this distortion of historical fact.<\/p>\n

Take, as just one of numerous examples, the following\u2026<\/p>\n

The Daytona Beach News-Journal<\/em> (my local Florida paper) ran a story, way back on February 25, 2004, which was headlined as follows: “Jordan Joins Chorus Against Israeli Wall.” Prince Zeid al Hussein complained that the barrier might send Palestinian Arabs fleeing into his own kingdom. He also justified suicide\/homicide bombings by blaming them on the four decades’ old Israeli occupation. No mention, of course, about how those lands became “occupied,” nor why.<\/p>\n

Let’s proceed next with a much-needed reality check, and no matter how many times some of us try to get these well-documented, major points across, it seems as if there\u2019s often\u00a0a mental barrier preventing them from being absorbed.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the Hashemites–whether back in 2004, regarding Israel\u2019s security barrier designed to keep suicide\/homicide bombers from targeting its innocents, or now, in 2018, with the Peace Treaty issue–would do themselves a favor by abandoning the brazen nerve (chutzpah<\/em>) required in addressing such issues to anyone with knowledge of the actual history involved. Since many folks don\u2019t possess this,\u00a0they feel free to rant and lie through their teeth. It\u2019s called taqiyya<\/em>, permissible distortion of the truth–especially where \u201cInfidels\u201d are involved–as when Egypt\u2019s President Nasser and Jordan\u2019s King Hussein were recorded on tape scheming how they would blame their massive defeat in the June \u201967 War on American aircraft, not Israel\u2019s.<\/p>\n

To appreciate what comes next, first find a map of the Middle East. One of the world will do, but everything will be much smaller. Find Jordan and then find Israel to its west. And now hold onto your seats…<\/p>\n

In 1922, Colonial Secretary Churchill, to reward Arab allies in World War I (remember the movie, Lawrence of Arabia<\/em>?), chopped off roughly 80%<\/strong> of the original Palestine Mandate issued to Great Britain on April 25, 1920–all the land east of the Jordan River–and created the purely <\/em>Arab<\/em> “Emirate of Transjordan”–today’s Jordan. This was engineered by Churchill a year earlier at the Cairo Conference.<\/p>\n

Emir Abdullah, who received the land on behalf of the Hashemites of Arabia (who were in the process of getting kicked out by the rival forces of Ibn Saud–hence today\u2019s Saudi Arabia<\/em>), attributed this gift to an “act of Allah” in his memoirs. Sir Alec Kirkbride, Britain’s East Bank representative, had much to say about this gift to Arab nationalism and the separation of the lion’s share of the Palestine Mandate as well. Let’s check out just one small excerpt:<\/p>\n

“In due course the remarkable discovery was made that the clauses of the mandate relating to the establishment of a National Home for the Jews had never been intended to apply to the mandated territory east of the river (A Crackle of Thorns,<\/em> page 27).” In other words, the so-called \u201cJordanian\u201d lands Abdullah II wants \u201cback\u201d are, at the very least, questionable\u2026<\/p>\n

While all of this may be boring to those in the know, if you count students educated\/indoctrinated by too many of the \u201cexperts\u201d in academia among those folks, don\u2019t count on it.<\/p>\n

Historically speaking, right from the get-go, and despite more Arab taqiyya claims to the contrary, Arab nationalism was awarded the bulk of the original 1920 Palestine Mandate. While it, too, officially remained tied to the whole of the Mandate until 1946, what would later be renamed Jordan, nonetheless, became a virtually separate entity. From 1922 onwards–after already receiving most of the territory–Arabs would next point to what remained <\/em>of “Palestine” (the area west of the River) to make yet further claims. And the Arab state in Palestine, Jordan, soon made itself totally Judenrein.<\/em> (Begs the Question: Does that mean that the Jewish state in Palestine–Israel–should thus also be able to make itself Arabrein<\/em>?)<\/p>\n

Please note that at the same time the above events were happening, Churchill saw to it that another Hashemite prince, Emir Feisal, recently booted out of Syria by the French, would take sole charge, in the name of Arab nationalism, of the larger Mandate of Mesopotamia as a consolation prize. In collusion with British petroleum politics, the Kurds would thus see their own promises, made to them by the Brits for independence, nipped in the bud. Arab Iraq<\/em>–with no Palestine-like partition plans for millions of Kurds in their majority\u00a0oil-rich north–would soon emerge\u2026<\/p>\n

As for Palestine, Arabs answer this by citing geographical and other differences between some Arabs and others. Using this same logic, since there are Jews in Israel from over a hundred different countries (including one half who are from refugee families from so-called “Arab”\/Muslim lands, and some whose families never left Israel since the days of the Roman conquest two millennia ago), then Jews are therefore entitled to multiple states as well. Arabs have\u00a0almost two dozen to date.<\/p>\n

Think of it… Less than\u00a0a half million Arabs were entitled to Kuwait.<\/p>\n

Using the Arabs’ own “unique” refugee-counting system (which President Trump\u2019s team has wisely decided to abandon), over four million Jewish refugees from \u201cArab\u201d\/Muslim lands could then stake a claim to parts of Morocco, Iraq, Algeria, etc. Yemen even had a series of Jewish kings just before the age of Muhammad, and, while we\u2019re at it, the second holiest city in Islam, Medina, started out as a date palm oasis founded by Jews fleeing the Roman wars in Judea. The latter\u00a0gave Muhammad refuge during his flight (hijra<\/em>) from enemies in Mecca, and when they refused to recognize him as the new king of the hill and \u201cSeal of the Prophets,\u201d he thanked them by decapitating the males and enslaving the women and children.<\/p>\n

Arab and pro-Arab professors typically ignore all of this when teaching such topics. On the Palestine issue, the main starting dates for them are not 1920 and 1922, but 1947…the proposed partition of “Palestine.” Of course<\/em> they conveniently omit telling their students that this was the second <\/em>partition of the land (which the Arabs rejected) and pretend that Jordan was always a separate state with no connection to Palestine–another of almost two dozen Arabs acquired largely via the imperial conquest, colonization, and forced Arabization of mostly other non-Arab peoples\u2019 lands. And the indoctrinated student sponges take it all in and join groups like Students for Justice in Palestine in protesting those nasty Zionists whose sole, minuscule, resurrected nation requires a magnifying glass to locate on a world globe.<\/p>\n

The Jordan-Palestine connection is just one of many well-documented facts (not “Zionist propaganda”) completely ignored or distorted by Arab spokesmen and their buddies and, unfortunately, little known by much of the rest of the world. Arabs typically claim Jews got 78% of all of the land (this after Arab Transjordan received almost 80% in 1922), and leading newspapers typically prepare segments on the Middle East ignoring this crucial Jordan-Palestine connection as well, starting the discussion with 1947.<\/p>\n

Even this otherwise<\/em> good, recent analysis in The New York Times<\/em> leaves out actually placing Jordan onto the Arab side of the balance sheet in this Arab-Jewish equation. In here, again, Jordan is treated as if it\u2019s always been independent–not part of–the overall balance between Jewish and Arab rights in the region\u2026<\/p>\n

While debate now revolves around a “two state” or even a “one state” solution to the conflict, the reality is that Jordan is historically and demographically Palestinian<\/em>. And regarding that latter designation, \u201cPalestine\u201d is another of those issues conveniently not elaborated upon by the expert practitioners of the typical Middle Eastern Studies classroom double standard.<\/p>\n

To end Judaea\u2019s quest for freedom and independence once and for all, after the Jews\u2019 second <\/em>major (\u201cBar Kochba\u201d) revolt against Rome in 133-135 C.E., the\u00a0 emperor, Hadrian, poured salt onto the wound by deliberately renaming Judaea after the Jews\u2019 historic enemies, the non-Semitic (let alone non-Arab) \u201cSea People\u201d–the Philistines from the Greek islands around Crete.<\/p>\n

And, back to those possible Palestine \u201csolutions,\u201d there may be a third <\/em>one…though it’s kept hushed up. Jordan has been, relatively speaking, a reasonable neighbor, so Israel hasn’t made an issue of this.<\/p>\n

Indeed, it was Israel which saved the Hashemites’ derrieres prior to, but especially in, 1970 when\u00a0Arafat’s PLO decided to cash in on this third alternative. Without Israel\u2019s mobilizing on the border (and other actions as well), the Syrian-backed PLO attempt to overthrow King Hussein would likely have been a done deal. During that episode, Hashemite Arabs\u00a0killed\u00a0about fifteen\u00a0thousand of Arafat’s other Arab\u00a0compadres–in “Black September” alone. Regarding a possible third solution, it\u2019s useful to see my decades-long friend, Ted Belman (IsraPundit), and London-based, Palestinian-Jordanian opposition leader, Mudar Zahran\u2019s, \u201cultimate\u201d Jordan Option<\/em> take on this plan as well\u2026<\/p>\n

Palestinian Arabs “fleeing into Jordan,” a la Prince Zeid’s 2004 remarks would, in reality, be moving simply to just another part of Palestine…as most did when they fled\u00a0the fighting Arabs started upon Israel’s rebirth in 1948.<\/p>\n

When Egypt’s Nasser decided it was once again<\/em> time to drive the Jews into the sea in 1967, he contacted Jordan’s King Hussein and convinced him to join in the planned massacre. Israel, through the United Nations, begged the young Hussein to distance himself from Nasser’s plans. The King didn’t listen and launched an attack on the Jewish half of Jerusalem instead.<\/p>\n

The rest, as they say, is history. And that’s how Jordan \u201clost\u201d the West Bank–which it seized illegally in the 1948 fighting–in the first place. Transjordan<\/em>–led by Sir John Bagot Glubb and his British officers–joined other Arab countries in attacking a reborn Israel, trying to nip it in the bud.<\/p>\n

The Hashemites would be better off not bringing up such subjects at all…at least to those with any knowledge of fact and sense of fair play.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, when you start a war and lose, there’s a price to pay–especially if the land you launched from wasn\u2019t yours in the first place. Whatever will or won’t become, in the future, of the land in question, it must be noted that this is disputed <\/em>territory, not “purely Arab” land. In Arab eyes, however, they claim the whole region as \u201cpurely Arab patrimony.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jews lived and owned property in those “occupied territories” until their slaughter by Arabs in the 1920s and 1930s. Judea (as in JEW) and Samaria, only since the 20th<\/sup> century known as the “West Bank” (via British imperialism and Transjordan’s later annexation), were non-apportioned<\/em> parts of the original 1920 Mandate with thousands of years of documented Jewish history; and leading authorities such as Eugene Rostow, William O’Brien, and others have stressed that these areas were open to settlement by Jew, Arab, and other residents of the Mandate alike.<\/p>\n

Indeed, hundreds of thousands of Arabs poured into the area from all over the Middle East and\u00a0 North Africa. The Minutes of the League of Nations Permanent Mandates Commission documented scores of thousands entering into Palestine from Syria alone in just several months\u2019 time. Hamas’ “patron saint,” Sheikh Izzedine al-Qassam (for whom the rockets and terror brigade are named), was from Latakia.<\/p>\n

It’s estimated that many more Arabs entered the Mandate, to take advantage of the economic development going on because of the Jews, under cover of darkness and were never recorded…more Arab settlers <\/em>setting up more Arab settlements <\/em>in Palestine.<\/em> Why are these “legal” and those of the Jews not? Scores of thousands of Izzy\u2019s Jewish neighbors in Syria soon became refugees fleeing that country. Greater New York City alone now has tens of thousands of descendants of those folks, with some of the most beautiful synagogues I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n

Peace between Israel and its immediate Arab neighbor to the east (whoever winds up ruling it) is obviously a worthy goal. But the world must stop accepting the Hashemites\u2019 assertion that Jordan is not part of the balance sheet when the of rights of both Arabs and Jews in the region are being discussed.<\/p>\n
